Rehoming Rods

Helping kids get involved in responsible sea fishing.

Since the pandemic a vast amount of people have started fishing be it in the boat or from the shore. The younger generation entering the sport however has been on the decline, what do you think the reason is behind this? Maybe the new online game craze? Or social media? Maybe it could be the cost?

We had a great chat with Jason Scott aka The Eastbourne Fisherman. Finding out about what his rewarding iniative is.

I have been fishing for 4 years now, I tried it briefly as a kid. I remember asking my grandma to take me to Eastbourne Pier and just stand there looking at people fish! It wasn’t until my uncle took me mackerel fishing that my real passion for fishing started it was so fun as soon as the mackerel season ended i was like what else can I fish for. I have been hooked ever since!

I have 5 kids from 14 – 9 years old. I started a YouTube channel to show the younger ones what fishing was like and now they come with me too! My channel has since grown and so has our Facebook group.

My main goals now are what can I do to help the wider fishing community and give back to this amazing sport whether it is supporting kids and the next generation into sea fishing Campaigning to support tackle shops And fundraising I’m grateful to be able to do these things and show my kids you can do whatever you want in life but always be kind and help others.

Jason started his YouTube channel as a diary to show his children what and how to sea fish, they could play it back as and when they like! Now it has grown, and Jason has over 3.5k subscribers and runs several initiatives, namely ‘Rehoming rods’ and ‘Support your local tackle shop’.

Rehoming Rods originally started through the Facebook Group but has now Three drop off points with more coming along soon. Jason reached out to all the members of his Facebook group to see if they had old fishing gear they no longer used, he also visited car boots and recycling centres to collect a haul that he could make into kits which could be given a second life in the hands of a young angler. The kits also have information from the angling trust which teaches responsible angling.

Jason and his heart-warming initiative has rehomed over 60 kits to the next generation from all walks of life! Life has been hard for all families the last few years so this is something that we are proud to get behind. We are not the only ones; The Fish Locker aka John Locker was the person who mentioned Jason to us! He said “Encouraging the next generation into our sport is something we are very passionate about, Jason’s passions and priorities align greatly with ours. Family and outdoors fun and helping others. We are always happy to help!”

If you would like to get involved email Jason and he will be glad of any donations or being a drop off point in your area. We all know that a refreshing sunrise or a stunning sunset is better for the soul than being sat indoors playing computer games!

“One of the most wonderful parts of watching your child’s progression through the stages of fishing is the confidence it brings. Fishing provides a lifetime of milestones and skills.”
